Karen H. Moore chairs the firm's
Bankruptcy/Creditors' Rights group practice and is also a member of the
Litigation group. She is an outstanding strategist and business problem-solver skilled in handling out-of-court workouts as well as state and federal court proceedings. As chair of the Bankruptcy/Creditor's Rights group, Ms. Moore is a proponent of alternate fee arrangements, in suitable bankruptcy cases, that give clients several choices other than the traditional hourly rate structure.
In her more than 20 years working in the bankruptcy/reorganization area, Ms. Moore has fashioned a formidable career in both the public and private sector. Most recently, she was the first female partner in the Bankruptcy department of a prominent Baltimore law firm where she represented large corporate debtors, creditors' committees and unsecured creditors in complex Chapter 11 reorganization proceedings, and also assisted Chapter 7 trustees with the administration of large asset cases. Prior to that, Ms. Moore spent 10 years as the head of the U.S. Trustee's office in Baltimore, where she represented the Department of Justice in Chapter 7, 11 and 13 cases and supervised the Chapter 7 panel and Chapter 13 standing trustees. Her professional career began in Chicago, where she worked with the Department of Justice, Office of the U.S. Trustee after practicing with a prestigious law firm.
Active in a myriad of legal organizations, Ms. Moore currently is a member of the Board of Directors of the Women's Bar Association for the state of Maryland and is a past president (2004-2005) of the Maryland Bankruptcy Bar Association. She also is a member of the American Bar Association, American Bankruptcy Institute and the International Women's Insolvency & Restoring Confederation (IWIRC).
Ms. Moore is a graduate of Trinity College who earned her J.D. at DePaul's University College of Law. While in law school, she assisted the Honorable Robert E. Ginsberg, a former member of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois, with various projects related to the implementation of what was then the new Bankruptcy Code. Following law school, she clerked for the Honorable Richard L. Merrick, also a former member of that same district's U.S. Bankruptcy Court. Ms. Moore is a member of the Maryland and Illinois bars, and is admitted to the Federal Court-District of Maryland.
