Kathleen M. Dumais is a member of the firm’s Litigation and Family Law practice groups who concentrates on all aspects of family and domestic relations law. Her practice includes complex divorce and custody matters, and she often serves as a court-appointed best interest attorney for children in custody disputes.

A longtime Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, Ms. Dumais has continued to be acknowledged for her outstanding work in the field. She received the prestigious 2010 Beverly A. Groner Family Law Award from the Maryland State Bar Association Family & Juvenile Law Section for her dedication to the practice of family law and for exemplifying the highest professional standards during a distinguished career. Later this year, she will accept the Rita C. Davidson Award from the Women’s Bar Association of Maryland and the Dorothy Beatty Memorial Award from the Women’s Law Center of Maryland.

Consumer and business publications also have provided similar recognition of Ms. Dumais’ remarkable record. She was included in the May/June 2010 “Top Divorce Lawyer” rankings in Bethesda Magazine and has twice been named among the top 50 divorce lawyers in the Washington metropolitan area by Washingtonian. She was selected one of Maryland’s “Top 100 Women” by the Daily Record in three different years (most recently in 2009), earning membership in the exclusive “Circle of Excellence.” And she is a past winner of both the Woman of the Year Award given by the Montgomery County Business and Professional Women and the Professionalism Award from the Montgomery County Bar Association.

As a complement to her professional pursuits, Ms. Dumais has fashioned an equally formidable career in public service as a member of the Maryland General Assembly. She has twice been elected to the Maryland House of Delegates for District 15 in Montgomery County, currently sits on the Judiciary Committee and was appointed Parliamentarian by House Speaker Michael Busch in 2006. Her political career has earned her numerous accolades over the past five years, including the 2005 Legislative Award from the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence (MNADV); the 2007 Public Policy Award from the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA); the 2008 Legislator of the Year Award from the Maryland Legislative Agenda for Women (MLAW); and the 2009 Public Policy Award from the Maryland Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.

Ms. Dumais previously served on the Board of the Montgomery County Bar Foundation, and is a past Treasurer of both the Foundation and Montgomery County Bar Association. She was Co-Chair of the Family Law Section of the Montgomery County Bar Association (BAMC), President of the Women’s Bar Association of Maryland–Montgomery County Chapter and a member of that group’s Executive Committee from 1995 to 2006. She formerly chaired the BAMC’s New Practitioner’s Section and has served on numerous Bar Association special committees and task forces. Ms. Dumais also has been recognized by the Catholic Charities Legal Services Network for her outstanding pro bono services.

In keeping with her background as a former high school teacher, Ms. Dumais continues to work with young adults through the High School Mock Trial program, a joint effort of the BAMC and Montgomery County Public Schools. She serves on the Board of Directors of St. Vincent Pallotti High School in Laurel, MD, her alma mater.

Ms. Dumais received her undergraduate degree cum laude from Mount Vernon College in Washington, D.C. and her J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law. She is a member of the bars of Maryland, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland and the District of Columbia.
