Paley Rothman Announces Hiring of Former Winston & Strawn Attorney Ryan Spiegel

Ryan Spiegel, Principal

BETHESDA, MD — Paley Rothman, a full-service law firm in the Washington area for more than 40 years, announced that Ryan Spiegel has joined as a principal and will be a member of the Litigation, Corporate, Government Contracts and Science & Technology practice groups.

Mr. Spiegel spent the past decade in the D.C. office of Winston & Strawn, concentrating his practice in complex commercial and civil litigation, and government contracts. His clients have included prominent defense, pharmaceutical, banking, consumer products, construction, and telecommunications companies—and his cases have involved a broad spectrum of legal issues, from intellectual property claims to employment matters and from contract disputes to internal corporate investigations. He has also established an impressive Government Contracts practice, covering bid protests, trade secrets, the False Claims Act, and various business torts.

“It’s not often that you find a young yet highly experienced litigator who has enjoyed the success that Ryan has,” said Paley Rothman Co-President James Hammerschmidt. “He has handled high profile cases and worked on matters around the world. We are excited to have him join us. He will be a tremendous asset to the firm and a wonderful resource for clients.”

Driven by a strong commitment to community service, Mr. Spiegel has performed countless hours of pro bono work, serving as lead counsel on a death penalty appeal in Alabama, and working on Holocaust reparations claims, asylum cases, and landlord/tenant disputes. He serves as an elected City Council member in Gaithersburg, Md. where he resides and is a member of the Maryland Municipal League and Metropolitan Council of Governments.

A graduate of Stanford Law School, Mr. Spiegel served as co-president of the Stanford Law & Policy Review. As a law student, he worked in the Office of the Legal Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in The Hague, helping to prosecute war criminals and forge multilateral agreements with other countries. He earned his undergraduate degree in Journalism, magna cum laude and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Maryland Honors Program.

Mr. Spiegel is admitted to practice in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and New York, the U.S. District Courts for Maryland and D.C., and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He has submitted a number of petitions and amicus curiae briefs to the Supreme Court.

Paley Rothman, founded in 1972, has grown to a firm of more than 35 lawyers that provides legal counsel to corporate and individual clients in a wide range of practice areas. It maintains a business-orientation and handles tax, real estate, employment law, estate planning, litigation and a variety of other matters for businesses and professionals throughout the Washington metropolitan area.
