Carlos Lastra Provided Commentary in Article titled “Entertainer’s Case Focuses Attention on Guardianship Issues”

Carlos Lastra, Principal

Carlos Lastra provided commentary in an article written by Samantha J. Subin titled: "Entertainer’s case focuses attention on guardianship issues," which was published in the July 2021 edition of the Maryland Family Law Update.

Carlos Lastra, co-chair of Paley Rothman’s family law practice, has some concerns with conservatorships. While they may seem “great on paper,” they also offer an opportunity for someone to abuse their power, as Spears alleges.

“The law does not take into consideration that people might want to do nefarious things that in another scenario would be theft,” said Lastra. “They are given the keys to the safety deposit box, the checks to the bank account, the keys to the Mercedes, and no one bats an eye.”

“Once you’re declared incompetent you lose credibility,” he said. “It’s easy to get into one of these. It’s harder to resolve.”
