Paley Rothman Turns 50 and Celebrates Five Decades of Depth, Continuity, and Commitment

BETHESDA, MD (February 1, 2022) – Paley Rothman is pleased to announce that the firm is celebrating its 50th anniversary and five decades of a commitment to outstanding client legal counsel and community service.

“We were founded on a simple idea: an unwavering focus on our clients and that personalized practical legal advice could make all the difference,” says Co-President Robert Maclay. “We can see 50 years later, that the values of our founding partners laid the groundwork for decades of success.”

The firm opened on February 1, 1972, when Stephen Paley and Mark Rothman left the tax practice of the Department of Justice and decided to start a firm in Montgomery County. At the time, there were no tax specialists in the suburban area. Since then the firm has grown along with, and helped support and fuel, the growth of the Montgomery County business community, including the I-270 Tech Corridor. Now, Paley Rothman is a preeminent firm handling the most complex business and individual legal matters.

As a prominent business in Montgomery County, Paley Rothman believes that it is their duty to give back to the community. Attorneys and staff consistently volunteer at local soup kitchens, charitable organizations, do pro bono work, and are on the boards of several County institutions. Many Paley Rothman attorneys hold leadership positions in legal, charitable, and community organizations.

“Today, Paley Rothman provides practical counsel and unique insight to businesses, nonprofits, corporations, trade associations and individuals,” says Co-President James Hammerschmidt. “While we are proud to highlight our history of excellence and client and community service, we continue to look toward the future and another 50 years.”
