“When Steve Paley and I decided more than 45 years ago to each leave the law firms we were working for in D.C. and start our own firm in Montgomery County, everyone thought we were a little crazy. But that turned out to be a wise decision. I no longer practice full time, although I do continue to maintain a relationship as counsel to several long time clients.”
Mark Rothman is a founding member of the firm and currently serving as senior counsel to the Corporate, Estate Planning, Tax and Estate & Trust Administration practice groups. He practices primarily tax and business law and estate planning, and represents large real estate holding companies and large retail operating companies. He has extensive experience structuring proposed business ventures, such as limited liability companies, limited liability partnerships and Subchapter-S corporations, and also represents clients in conjunction with the sale and acquisition of a business. In addition to his business-related practice, Mark handles sophisticated and complex estate and succession planning matters, particularly as relates to family-owned businesses, and has been published on numerous occasions in the tax journal, Estate Planning.
Mark has chaired and spoken as part of numerous programs and has lectured extensively on corporate tax planning and estate planning. He was previously active in numerous bar activities and various community and civic organizations, having volunteered for many years as a member of the Board of Trustees of Suburban Hospital and the Suburban Hospital Foundation. Prior to entering private practice, Mark served for five years as a trial attorney with the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.
Even though he is not practicing full-time, Mark remains in touch with several clients and continues to work from his home in Aspen, Colorado. He travels to Bethesda monthly for face-to-face client meetings and to check on life at the firm.
