James Hammerschmidt Named Paley Rothman Co-President
BETHESDA, MD — James Hammerschmidt, a principal and co-chair of Paley Rothman’s Employment Law practice group, has been named co-president of the firm. He joins Robert Maclay as a member of the Operating Committee for a firm that has grown to close to 40 lawyers as it celebrates its 40th year in business.
Mr. Hammerschmidt has fashioned a formidable career that reflects considerable professional achievement. While his civil litigation and appellate practice involves often-complex matters in shareholder and business disputes, real estate, trusts and estates and a wide variety of other issues, he has extensive experience representing employment law clients in federal and state court—and before such government agencies as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Department of Labor and numerous human rights commissions.
An active participant in the local and state legal community, Mr. Hammerschmidt recently assumed his duties as Treasurer of the Bar Association of Montgomery County and continues to serve on the Council of the Maryland State Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Law Section. He is also completing terms as the Second Vice President of the Board for the Federal Bar Association’s (FBA) Maryland Chapter and as a Board member for the FBA’s Labor and Employment Section, a group for which he previously served as Chair. In addition to his work within the legal community, Mr. Hammerschmidt has for many years been a Board member for the Lubuto Library Project, a nonprofit devoted to building libraries and establishing educational programs for orphans in sub-Saharan Africa.
“His colleagues at Paley Rothman marvel at Jim’s legal acumen and his energetic support of so many organizations that are dedicated to advancing the profession,” said Maclay. “He also combines an appreciation of legal history with a sense of vision that makes him uniquely qualified to help lead our firm into an exciting future. We are lucky to have him and proud to announce his new position.”
Mr. Hammerschmidt, of Rockville, Md., graduated cum laude from the Saint Louis University School of Law where he served as Executive Editor of the Public Law Review. He is a member of the Maryland and District of Columbia Bars, and is licensed to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the District of Maryland the District of Columbia.
Paley Rothman is a full-service law firm that provides legal counsel to corporate and individual clients in a wide range of practice areas. It maintains a business orientation, but handles tax, real estate, employment law, estate planning, litigation and a variety of other matters for businesses and professionals in Montgomery County and throughout the Washington metropolitan area.
